Political Advertising

By Ted Dhanik

Political advertising is not new to the country, whether it is politicians sponsoring ads that put down their opponents or political action committees (PAC) that purchase ads promoting their choice political candidate. What is new to political advertising, however, is the use of the internet for political candidate promotion.

Internet advertising is a recent development, and has just started to become a way to advertise political candidates’ campaigns. One such way that this is being done is through display advertising. This is when ads are shown on websites, either as a pop up window, a banner at the top of the page, or an advertisement that is on the side of the webpage, and leads the consumer to a specific website. This can be used to great benefit for the candidate or PAC, as it can generate interest in the constituents and lead them to the webpage of a specific cause or candidate where they can learn more information.

Internet advertising for politicians can be decisively useful in distributing information about a stance a politician takes, as well as reaching out to specific constituents in local residency on certain issues. It is hard for a candidate to be so specific about certain issues when creating a nationwide television commercial, but much easier when creating an online banner that will only show up on selected webpages. This allows them to focus their attention on a specific group of people with little additional effort and money.

Political advertisers are still working on expanding their marketing to the Internet population, and display marketing is one such way to consider doing it.
