Decide on how you will test the process

There does not need to be any actual money spent to test a system. You can use a dummy card number provided by payment gateway to test the entire process. Alternatively if they do not have such a system, you can temporarily discount one of the items to $1 and buy it using your own card.

Navigate the entire process

When some order testing is done, it is usually done at the website itself. However, a lot of customers come in from promotions on lists and ads. When testing, come in to the website through whatever channels exist. This way any issues when coming into the site, or problems with the landing page will also be apparent. From then on examine every step of the way to the checkout.

Purchase

After the process check upto checkout, now test the rest of the process. Once the purchase is complete, make sure the customers gets the confirmation emails and invoices. If you did an actual purchase, then tracking information for the order, shipping confirmations etc can also be checked. If your product is software, then the download link availability and speed should be checked. This way you would have tested the process from end to end.
